  • Customer Retention vs. New Clients: Finding the Right Balance

Please bear with me as I drop a nugget to business owners. Always remember this, your client base cannot resemble a revolving door. If adding new customers or clients jeopardizes the older ones, you’ll likely find yourself treading water in business.

Here are a few things to keep in mind. Customer loyalty grows over time. The longer the relationship, the more likely it will continue. Customers you’ve cultivated are less likely to leave even for a better price or the perception of more value. As humans, we are naturally resistant to change, especially for change’s sake. Along the same lines, clients you acquire are coming from somewhere. Often, they’re ending a relationship to engage with you. Maybe they’re more difficult to please and might be less loyal.

To be honest, we all have some customers we need to fire. We must also understand the limits of our capacity to provide quality service and not overextend ourselves. That said, sometimes we outgrow customers, and sometimes we must pursue more significant and more time, effort, and resource-consuming activities. Keeping all that in mind, know this; the surest way to build a business is to add new customers while keeping the old ones.
